Edition 40

Colour and design are taking centre stage for this week’s Our Take. Have you ever seen a new shade of something – Pantone are making a big deal out of releasing a new swatch. The world of beauty has announced a more expensive way to apply lipstick. And fashion house Valentino is creating a global podium for emerging designers via social media.

This is the last set of takes we’re sharing in 2021. Hope you have a great break, and return in January refreshed and re-energised. See you then.

Very Peri for your Pleasure

Global colour authority Pantone has for the first time announced a brand new colour swatch as their annual colour of the year.  Pantone 17-3938 ‘Very Peri’ is a vibrant periwinkle blue. We think it is reminiscent of the blue glow of digital devices; perfect for a time when we’re increasingly shifting to the digital realm.

Along with this cool blue shade announcement, Pantone  have also launched their first official NFT collection. Each ‘Very Peri’ piece was inspired by the colour of the year and created in collaboration with Paris-based digital artist Polygon1993.

An NFT is a unique digital asset that exists completely digitally on a blockchain in a similar way to cryptocurrency. They have been becoming popular in the art world in what feels like a natural evolution of what makes ‘collectors’ items. With trends in gaming, the expanding popularity of the metaverse and rising artistic community in the digital space, ‘Very Peri’ is a futuristic shade for futuristic times.

Beau-tech-ful News!

Fashion giants YSL and L’Oréal recently debuted a new gadget that creates lipstick shades in whatever colour the wearer wants.

Titled Yves Saint Laurent Beauté Rouge Sur Mesure Powered by Perso (try saying that three times quickly), the device takes three different lipstick colour pods and squirts their liquid out at the top of the device for the wearer to mix. When combined, they create the desired shade of the lips in question. The top of the Bluetooth-enabled device doubles as a compact so people can take it on the go and touch up their colour as needed.

The new tech also allows users to get creative on an app made for iOS or Android. Users can select from several features including a ‘shade wheel’ which showcases a vast collection of colours and shades while the ‘shade match,’ and ‘shade stylist’ use smart algorithms to match colours to outfits using photos uploaded by the user. The app also includes a social component that showcases colours other users have made and highlights “real-time trends” created by their YSL experts.

Of course, relying on customers buying the pods is where YSL will continue their revenue Of course, relying on customers buying the pods is where YSL will continue their revenue stream and as this device is only compatible with YSL products, they have guaranteed brand loyalty with anyone who splurges on the Rouge Sur Mesure. Pretty clever if you ask us.

Not to mention, the colour possibilities are endless… imagine!
